Evaluation of biomaterials in breast augmentation

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

To compare biocompatibility and clinical application effect of various biomaterials for breast augmentation.

METHODS:

A total of 22 articles about biomaterials for breast augmentation were collected from CNKI from 2004 to 2008. The clinical application of biomaterials was evaluated based on biomaterial collection, approaching way, clinical effect, complication processing, and organic effect; the complication was analyzed based on approaching time, implants, courses, and processing; thereafter, the references were sorted according to experimental animal, grouping, materials, observational method, results, and conclusions, which provided evidences for clinical application.

RESULTS:

Four articles about experimental animals, including rat and rabbit, indicated that silicone gel prosthesis did not have any effect on human immune system, while it did not have cytotoxicity and carcinogenicity but had well histocompatibility; therefore, it was an ideal material for breast augmentation. A total of 14 out of 18 articles about clinical application of materials for breast augmentation demonstrated that silicone gel prosthesis was superior to other biomaterials in biomedical characteristics, surgical processing, and complication of implant.

CONCLUSION:

Silicone gel prosthesis is a good material for breast augmentation with well histocompatibility and cytotoxicity.
