Abstract

BACKGROUND:

The mechanical strength, injectable ability and solidification of traditional calcium phosphate cement were too poor to develop its clinical application.

OBJECTIVE:

To review the methods to increase the properties of calcium phosphate cement and its clinical application.

METHODS:

An online search of Web of Knowledge and CNKI database was performed for articles addressing performance improvement and clinical application of calcium phosphate cement published between 1995 and 2011. Finally, 34 articles were selected in result analysis

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:

Calcium phosphate cement is characterized as good biocompatibility, porosity, plasticity, and non-toxic, which has been widely used as drug carrier, bone repair materials as well as in the treatment of bone tumors. Nowadays, the performance of calcium phosphate cement is improved by regulating the solid-phase composition of calcium phosphate cement, particle size and adding organic solvent.
