Abstract

Bladder problems occur in athletic and non-athletic individuals, in men and women, and in all age groups. Epidemiological data demonstrating a unique prevalence of bladder conditions in athletes is currently limited and requires further research. In addition to a brief review of bladder anatomy and physiology, our article reviews the pertinent historical, physical examination and diagnostic findings, as well as applicable treatments and return-to-play decisions, for the following bladder conditions in athletic individuals: bladder trauma, cystitis and its mimickers, urinary incontinence and neurogenic bladder, and bladder cancer.
