Traditionally, much of the impetus for developing dementia programs in the USA has come from individual Veterans' Affairs (VA) medical centers. In this climate, the Dementia Care Program at the Salem VA Medical Center (SVAMC) has been a model program in terms of integrating relevant services into a comprehensive, efficient and patient-friendly service. The clinicians of the program initiated the transformation utilizing community resources, volunteers and families of veterans with dementias. Veterans with dementias and their families enjoy the comprehensiveness of the program that seamlessly covers outpatient care, respite care, inpatient care and end-of-life care provided by the same interdisciplinary team.
