Abstract

Performed a cross-lagged panel analysis to determine the primary direction of effect among 3 categories of environmental stimulation and Bayley Mental Developmental Index scores measured at 6, 12, and 24 mo in 93 children. More capable children tended to elicit higher levels of maternal involvement and the provision of more appropriate play materials during the 6-22 mo period, whereas higher levels of maternal involvement tended to produce more capable children during the 12-24 mo period.
