IN BRIEFTorasemide (torsemide) is a loop diuretic that may be used in the treatment of oedema in patients with congestive heart failure, renal failure and liver disease. It appears to be as effective as furosemide (frusemide) in these patients.Torasemide also reduces blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. In this indication, lower dosages are required than are used in the treatment of oedema. The efficacy of torasemide in patients with hypertension is equivalent to that of hydrochlorothiazide. The adverse effect profile of torasemide appears to be similar to that of other loop diuretics. In the low dosages used in the treatment of patients with hypertension, it has little effect on serum potassium levels.
