Abstract

IN BRIEFOnce-daily administration of amlodipine, lacidipine or sustained-release isradipine reduces blood pressure in hypertensive patients. In controlled studies, blood pressure-lowering with these drugs is generally at least as good as with comparator agents. In common with other dihydropyridine calcium antagonists, the 3 agents are associated with adverse effects such as flushing and oedema that are an extension of their mechanism of action (vasodilatation). However, reflex tachycardia is infrequent during therapeutic use of long-acting agents.
