Abstract

IN BRIEFLosartan potassium is the first of a new class of antihypertensives, the angiotensin II antagonists. It has similar properties to those of ACE inhibitors, but unlike these drugs it does not appear to cause persistent cough. Thus, losartan potassium has a particular niche for use in patients with essential hypertension who cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors because of persistent cough. An expanded role in the treatment of hypertension is likely to require long-term outcomes data and pharmacoeconomic analysis. In addition, whether losartan potassium has similar benefits to ACE inhibitors in congestive heart failure and nephropathy awaits the results of ongoing studies.
