Abstract

Fragile X syndrome, the leading hereditary cause of mental retardation, has a behavioural profile characterised by hypersensitivity to stimuli, overarousability, inattention, hyperactivity and aggressive behaviour. Stimulants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), α2-adrenoceptor agonists, β-adrenoceptor antagonists and mood stabilisers are useful in treating neuropsychiatric symptoms in many individuals. Antipsychotics should be reserved for treating psychotic disorders, for impulse control disorders, or when challenging behaviours constitute an emergency.
