Abstract

Ertapenem, a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibacterial, is active against many Gram-negative (including Enterobacteriaceae) and Gram-positive aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. It is, therefore, a useful therapeutic option in the treatment of various infections caused by these pathogens. Ertapenem has a role in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia associated with typical respiratory pathogens and is of particular value in the treatment of polymicrobial infections, especially when Enterobacteriaceae and anaerobic bacteria are involved.
