Abstract

Evidence-Based Answer

Combination interferon and ribavirin treatment is more effective than interferon treatment alone for promoting a sustained virologic response in patients with hepatitis C virus infection who have already relapsed once, although the combination is associated with more adverse effects (SOR: B, systematic review). As monotherapy, treatment with interferon-alpha (at a dosage of 3 million units 3 times weekly) for 48 weeks is more effective than 24 weeks for achieving remission of disease at 6 months (SOR: C, systematic review of biochemical disease markers).
