Abstract

Evidence-Based Answer

The use of lubricant with or without massage during the second stage of labor does not reduce first or second degree perineal tears as compared with a hands-off approach or usual care without massage (SOR: B, RCTs at significant risk of bias). The effect of lubricants and perineal massage on third and fourth degree tears is unclear because of the rarity of these outcomes (no SOR given).
