Abstract

EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWER

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is as effective as standard care including medications, physical therapy and other modalities for resolving pain and improving function in low back pain. However, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are prescribed less frequently when back pain is treated with OMT than with the standard of care (SOR: B, RCT and cohort study). OMT is also associated with reduced use of opioids, oral steroids, and other analgesics as well as fewer days off from work and days on limited duty (SOR: B, cohort study).
