Abstract

EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWER

In mild to moderate ulcerative colitis flares, oral 5-aminosalycilates (5-ASA) is equivalent to sulfasalazine with fewer adverse effects (SOR: A, meta-analysis of RCTs). Rectal 5-ASA is equivalent to oral 5-ASA and superior to rectal steroids (SOR: A, meta-analysis of RCTs). For moderate to severe flares, oral corticosteroids are recommended (SOR: C, expert opinion).
