Cardiac Tamponade with only Left Heart Collapse in a Child with Severe Pulmonary Artery Hypertension

A 5-year-old child presented with severe hypotension and respiratory distress. Echocardiography demonstrated severe pulmonary arterial hypertension, pericardial effusion, and left ventricular (but not right atrial/right ventricular) collapse. Definite but transient hemodynamic improvement occurred with pericardiocentesi, but the patient succumbed to severe pulmonary artery hypertension and heart failure.
