Abstract

Some time ago, as I prepared to get married, a wise friend offered me the following piece of advice: ‘regular unhurried time together, just the two of you, is an essential not a luxury’. Twenty one years of marriage and four children later, I realise how right she was. Like many of you reading this, my life is lived at a pace where unpressured time definitely feels like a luxury. The value of unhurried time has been in the back of my mind since starting my midwifery training in October 2010 when, at the age of 41 and after many years of teaching Lamaze antenatal classes, I finally took the plunge into the world of midwifery as a student midwife.
