Interest in patient satisfaction has skyrocketed in the past two decades, and efforts to understand and measure patient satisfaction have spawned numerous commercial and institution-specific surveys. Patient satisfaction “report cards” periodically surface in the lay press, and health care purchasers, including fed-eral and local governments, have taken keen interest in how patients rate their care providers. Why all the fuss over patient satisfaction and surveys, and why does it matter for emergency physicians and administrators?
