Evidence suggests that early non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is often the treatment of choice, particularly for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Therefore, having access to NIV in EDs is likely to improve patient outcomes and reduce the likelihood of their mechanical ventilation.
