Abstract

Isothiazolinones are biocides inducing sensitization and elicitation via cosmetics, particularly wipes for intimate hygiene (also for babies), and paints, the latter often responsible for airborne dermatitis. Substitution by methylisothiazolinone of the methylchloro- and methyl-isothiazolinone mixture by the cosmetic industry does not seem to resolve the contact-allergy problem. Among the newer photoallergens, the NSAID ketoprofen not only induces severe and long-lasting photo-allergic contact dermatitis, but also gives rise to the development of photocontact allergy to the sunscreens benzophenone-3 and octocrylene.
