Abstract

Providing mental health services for medically underserved populations is often difficult. This article describes a demonstration project designed to examine the process of developing a mental health collaborative care model in a newly formed, managed care program for the medically uninsured. The article looks at the collaboration process from the patient, medical provider, support staff, and mental health perspectives. Lessons learned from this project provide valuable qualitative and quantitative information about the natural evolution of a collaborative delivery system that integrates mental health and medical health services.
