Abstract

Diagnoses not only convey information about bodies, they alter lives. Lucy M. Candib's (2004) story of diagnosis and treatment shows the experience of being diagnosed. Candib tells a story about seeking a new life story in which that diagnosis, and the treatments that follow from it, are a part. Her story breaks out of the mold of typical physician-as-patient narratives, especially as she seeks complementary and alternative responses to her condition.
