Abstract

Physicians' access to the inner, experiential world of others (patients, families) is mediated and facilitated by physicians' access to their own. One method is the cultivation of physicians' own imaginations. By writing poetry and stories about sickness and healing, physicians can become better attuned to the lived worlds of patients and their families. The journey inward is undertaken in service of the journey outward toward improved relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
