Abstract

THE PROBLEMHigh rates of infant morbidity and mortality in the community.THE PLAYERSBrockton Hospital and several community organizations.THE PLANSend advocates to recruit high-risk women for prenatal care.THE RESULTS3,300 women enrolled since 1997; 2,160 babies delivered; 74 percent of women enrolled in the program in their first trimester; 70 percent of women enrolled, ages 14-39, participated in hospital-sponsored childbirth classes. Average weight of Better Beginnings babies is higher than the statewide average.
