A contribution to a special issue on Hormones and Human Competition.The author looks back at his four decades of research on testosterone in the context of biosociology – its accomplishments, pitfalls, outstanding questions, and future directions.HighlightsPersonal reflections on forty years of research on testosterone and behavior.Biosocial research should deemphasize evolutionary speculations and focus on testable hypotheses.Promising work on testosterone and competition, to date, requires more solidly consistent empirical support.
