This paper will explore some of the barriers and potential solutions with a focus on packaging options available with combination products, premixed parenteral solutions, most ready-to-use dosage formulations, and the role of technology with bar coding and automation. Availability of unit of use and most ready-to-administer products (including combination products) in pharmacies, clearly reduces dispensing and storage costs and adds to the safety factor by reducing the number of steps during which medication errors could occur during delivery and dispensing. The popularity of combination products is increasing. In 2004, of the top 300 prescription drugs, more than 10% were combination products. Combination products potentially have fewer side effects, improved safety, effectiveness, and adherence, and have led to additional therapeutic options for patients.
