This article considers the complexity involved in understanding the expression of emotion during play therapy, A developmental perspective on emotions is described. The results from three studies that examined the expression of emotion during infants' and children's solitary play are discussed as a foundation from which to consider the functions of emotion in play therapy. Implications from that research are drawn for the special case of play during play therapy.
