Abstract

Therapeutic recreation has been receiving increasing attention as a valuable medium for habilitation efforts with the mentally retarded. To date, the profession has progressed largely on the justification of providing enjoyable experiences to the handicapped; research has contributed little to guide the recreator in the concept of activities as a treatment tool. Assuming that future learning is dependent on the acquisition of development goals, this study examined the relationships between various perceptual-motor skills used in recreation and the development concept of body image.

Utilizing one part of the Recreation Behavior Inventory and an adaption of the body image measures from the Purdue Perceptual-Motor Survey, a stepwise multiple regression was computed on the ratings of 58 TMR's. Results indicated that five separate factors had a R2 of .41 (R = .64; p < .01) with “Manipulation” and “Striking with the hand” contributing .34 towards the R2. “Kicking” and “Catching” contributed only moderately towards the R2, while “General Receipt-Propulsion” and age contributed negligibly.

The study contributes to the knowledge base of activity behaviors and their relationship to stages of human growth and development; conclusions provide direction for use by practitioners and future research.
