Pregnancy uniquely allows genetically discordant tissues of the mother and child to intimately coexist in harmony. In this issue ofImmunity, Ou and colleagues show that hepatitis B virus exploits these naturally occurring immune tolerance pathways to establish persistent postnatal infection in offspring.
