Analytical laboratory is the high risk workplace that may harm to health and safety of the laboratory worker. All analytical laboratories in KMUTT have to perform risk assessment according to the university safety policy. Objectives
To conduct the risk assessment in all analytical laboratory within KMUTT by using the standard procedure and make safety workplace for all laboratory workers. Methods Risk assessment has been designed and operated by using standard process, These have been done in five steps including Identify the hazard; Decide who might be harmed and how; Evaluate the risks and decide on control measures; Record your findings and implement them; review your assessment and update. The risk assessment process has been implemented in 122 analytical laboratories in KMUTT for one year (Jan 2017-Dec 2017).Findings
The results from hazard identification steps showed the top of hazards in analytical laboratories were hazardous chemicals (15%), electricity system(10%) and laboratory equipment (7%). The evaluated results from risk assessment step showed 18% of high risks with 22% of medium risks and 60% of low risks, The mitigation and control measures step have been done for high and medium risks with 5% of risk elimination, 7% of revised operator training, 18% of posted warning sign, 18% of SOP developed and 52% of PPE requirement. Conclusion
As a results of this study, risk assessment in analytical laboratory can help to decrease the chemical accidents and health impacts, and help to make safety workplace for all operators who work in analytical laboratory. Policy Implications Risk assessment is an important part of risk management which comply to Thai Industrial Standard 2677–2558 Safety Management System for Chemical Laboratories (TIS 2677–2558).
