Pathologies of the umbilical remnant are relatively common in equine neonates both as primary entities and as consequences of prematurity, dystocia and septicaemia. Early diagnosis is fundamental to improving the prognosis, and ultrasonography is the best method of achieving this. This article describes the normal sonographic appearance of the umbilical structures and the more common pathologies seen in practice.
