Abstract

Stability of fiber composites can be substantially influenced by the presence of various defects. We further develop results of Lapusta (1987) and Lapusta and Wagner (1999) and consider a simple formulation for the estimation of the effects of a matrix cavity and of fiber-matrix adhesion imperfections on local stability of fibrous composites (stability of separate fibers) under compression. The study is carried out within the framework of a linearized problem formulation.
