Abstract

A procedure is presented for determining stress intensity factors for single and double edge cracks in simply supported undamped Bernoulli–Euler beams under a moving load. The approach is based on using modal analysis to determine the equivalent load on the beam, then linear elastic fracture mechanics is used to calculate stress intensity factors (SIF). The results show that SIF is a function of time, speed of the moving load and crack size and location.
