Abstract

Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) has been clinically tested on 20 patients at two dose levels (22.5 µg and 7.5 µg, respectively) as a vasodilator during angiography of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA). The drug was injected intraarterially into the SMA prior to injection of contrast medium, resulting in a great increase of SMA blood flow and marked enhancement of venous visualization. Side effects were negligible, and in some cases PGE1 even reduced the discomfort caused by the contrast medium. In two additional patients a similar vasoactive effect was noted with 1 µg PGE1.
