Abstract

A turnaround in cardiovascular medicine is likely to take place in light of the results of 2 major studies. To the surprise of many, magnesium was found to be of no benefit in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI), nitrates had no effect on survival, and the survival benefit offered by ACE inhibitors was less than expected. In addition to influencing therapy choice, the trials also emphasised the importance of conducting ‘mega-trials’ to obtain reliable data on the effects of treatment regimens. The study results were presented at the 66th Sessions of the American Heart Association held in Atlanta, US, in November.
