Most viral diseases are treated symptomatically, but a number of new antiviral agents are under investigation especially for the treatment and prophylaxis of infections due to retroviruses and herpesviruses. Immunocompromised individuals are a relatively easy target for opportunistic viral infections and present a significant challenge for effective treatment. Recent developments and upcoming treatment options available for these patients were discussed at the 56th Annual Meeting of the American Dermatology Association [Orlando, US; March 1998].
