Abstract

Elimination of nicotine dependence is not possible for all smokers. Alternative methods of reducing tobacco-related mortality and morbidity, such as using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to decrease cigarette consumption, are gaining increasing support. Evidence that NRT, together with appropriate medical and behavioural principles, can help achieve and sustain reduced tobacco exposure were presented at the First International Conference of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco [Copenhagen, Denmark; August 1998].
