Abstract

Armodafinil [Nuvigil] is effective in reducing excessive sleepiness and fatigue associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnea syndrome (OSA/HS) or shift work sleep disorder (SWSD), according to data presented at the 159th Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) [Toronto, Ontario, Canada; May 2006]. Four randomised, double-blind, multinational, 12-week studies evaluated the effect of once-daily armodafinil in more than 1000 patients with excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, OSA/HS or SWSD, and were the basis for several analyses presented at the meeting. Fatigue or excessive sleepiness due to any of the three sleep disorders evaluated was significantly reduced in patients treated with armodafinil, compared with placebo recipients; significant improvements in attention and/or wakefulness were also observed. Importantly, armodafinil did not adversely affect intended sleep.
