Abstract

Formal games with rules are a normal activity of children 6 to 12 years old. Suitable games for use in psychiatric diagnosis and treatment of children in this age group can be classified into games of physical skill, cognitive skill, and chance. Games also vary in levels of complexity, which can be compared with a child's known abilities. In therapy, the game board is a projection of the relationship between child and therapist, allowing the child to communicate in this mode, and also allowing the therapist to make interventions in the context of the game, as well as verbally.
