In hospital settings which emphasize the importance of therapeutic relationships in the treatment process, ward staff often function as central adult models with whom the adolescent patients can gradually identify. The need for training programs to aid staff to develop requisite feelings of competence and confidence is widely recognized. This paper offers a model for a group training approach for ward staff who work with hospitalized adolescents. The techniques include a style of thinking, recognition of personal attitudes and personal anxiety, the uses of didactic information, and group leadership.
