Abstract

This study explored the merit of the W. G. Dahlstrom et al (1975) hypothesis that the mixed results of validity research on Barron's Ego Strength (Es) scale were due to artificially inflated Es scores obtained by defensive subjects. The Es scale and 2 measures of defensiveness were used to predict the outcome of psychiatric hospitalization for 92 patients receiving predominantly drug treatment. Results indicated that outcome was negatively related to Es scores but positively related to symptom acknowledgment. The Dahlstrom et al hypothesis was not supported.
