Abstract

Selectively reviews the suicide literature in the following areas: factors predictive of parasuicide, primary prevention of parasuicide, and secondary prevention of parasuicide. The research literature strongly suggests that secondary parasuicide prevention is the most viable path for future research to follow. Aggressive case finding and primary prevention approaches have failed to reduce suicide attempt rates. A secondary prevention model, based on factors predictive of parasuicide, was developed. This model focuses on stress reduction and cognitive restructuring as the primary goals of treatment. (36 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
