Abstract

The determination of human body composition is essential in studies aimed at evaluating the nutritional status of individuals, the management of the critically ill, studies of health implications of obesity and studies of the effects of treatments aimed at losing weight, among others. As the direct in vivo determination of body composition is not possible, researchers need to use indirect methods. This paper reviews the most commonly used methods for the indirect estimation of human body composition, including the technological basis of each one and their most suitable applications. The most basic body composition models that are used by the different techniques analyzed here are also described.
