Abstract

Reports errors in the article “Loss of Associability by a Compound Stimulus Comprising Excitatory and Inhibitory Elements” by John M. Pearce and Geoffrey Hall (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, 1979[Jan], Vol. 5[1], pp. 19-30). On page 28, several errors occur in the third paragraph in which differences between rates of conditioning in the experimental and control groups are discussed. Throughout the paragraph the control group (Group C-C) is referred to incorrectly as Group C-N. In addition, the discussion referring to the noise CS in fact concerns a light CS. In each of 2 experiments male hooded rats learned a discrimination between a stimulus (A) that signaled shock and a compound stimulus (AB) that signaled no shock. In Exp I (24 Ss) it was found that the AB compound acquired excitatory strength only slowly when, in a 2nd phase of training, it was made to signal the occurrence of shock. In Exp II (32 Ss) the acquisition of inhibitory strength by the compound was similarly found to be retarded. Exp II also replicated the results of Exp I.
