Qualitatively different encoding strategies for linear reasoning premises: Evidence for single association and distance theories

Abstract

All pairwise relations from a 6-term linear ordering (ABCDEF) were presented as a verbal conditioning task. The frequency of winning and end anchoring was controlled for the 6 target relations derived from the 4 inner terms (BCDE). 20 undergraduates were told, prior to learning, to think of the terms as boys' names and of the relation as taller than; 20 other undergraduates were given the same instructions after learing to criterion but before a posttest. For the before group, performance late in learning and on the posttest produced a distance effect as predicted if Ss formed linear representations, but no distance effect was obtained for the after group, thus suggesting Ss formed only single associations.
