Abstract

Objective:

To describe distribution of plasma homocysteine levels in patients with hypertension in Yangquan City of China.

Design and method:

A total of 1600 patients with hypertension aged 19–91 years were measured, Plasma homocysteine levels were measured by fluorescence Polarization immunoassay.

Results:

Total of prevalence rate of hyperhomocystinemia was 93.06% (1489/1600). Prevalence rate of hyperhomocystinemia in male was significantly higher than those in female [95.24(761/799) VS 90.89% (728/801), P = 0.001]. Geometric mean of plasma homocysteine was significantly higher in male than female (24.78 VS 19.20 umol/L, P = 0.000). Prevalence rate of stroke were significantly higher in hyperhomocystinemia groups than hyperhomocystinemia groups [20.77 (309/1488), vs 10.71% (12/112), P = 0.000].

Conclusions:

Prevalence rate of hyperhomocystinemia with hypertension was generally high in Yangquan city of China. Plasma homocysteine Levels indicates gender differences. Prevalence rate of Stroke in hyperhomocystinemia patients were higher.
