1-To find the frequency of secondary hypertension in Kosti area. 2- To highlight the treatable causes of secondary hypertension.Design and Method:
This is prospective descriptive hospital-based study conducted in the period from May to Octobers 2015, at Kosti Teaching Hospital, included 200 known hypertensive patients. The data was collected by pre designed questionnaire, then analysed by SPSS version 20.Results:
Essential hypertension was identified in 58.5% and secondary hypertension in 41.5% (endocrine10.0, renal 9.0, pregnancy induced hypertension 8.0, coarctation of aorta 6.5, and drugs 11.0). 26% had retinopathy and there were significant associations with ischemic heart diseases, atrial fibrillation, left ventricular hypertrophy and cerebrovascular accident (P value < 0.05).Conclusions:
Secondary hypertension and its complications are frequent. Many causes are avoidable and treatable.
