Abstract

Background:

Current estimation from the International Obesity Task Force suggest that at least 1.1 billion people over the world are overweight and 312 million of them are obese. Whereas, the increasing prevalence of obesity and overweight has led to surge of high blood pressure. Central obesity as a marker of body fat can be conveniently and cost effectively estimated by measuring body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC).

Objective:

To identify BMI or WC can show better reduction blood pressure after exercise and health education in Batu, Indonesia.

Method:

This study was an interventional pre and post test analytic study on 66 subjects. Vital signs and some physical examinations consisted of WC, height, and body weight measurement were performed before and after intervention in all subjects. The intervention included heart exercise in 60 minutes with frequency two times a week in 3 months and the subjects got health counseling about hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, smoking, and nutrition balance.

Result:

Before intervention, there were 47 subjects (71.2%) with hypertension and 19 subjects (28.8%) in normal blood pressure(BP). Whereas post intervention, there were 35 subjects (53%) with hypertension and 31 subjects (47%) in normal BP. There were significant reduction in all of the variables measured (Systolic Blood Pressure p = 0.00, Diastolic Blood Pressure p = 0.00, WC p = 0.019) in this study except for BMI variable (p = 0.087).

Conclusion:

Waist Circumference shows better blood pressure reduction after exercise and health education in Batu City, Indonesia.
