This article describes some of the major causes of stress for nurses and other professional care givers who work with the dying, their families, and the bereaved. It specifically addresses the stress of cumulative grief in the work situation and its effects on the care giver. It also describes some of the strategies far the institution and the individual nurse that can be used to minimize the effects of stress and cumulative grief and can contribute to emotional health in this type of work.
