This article describes the development, implementation, and results of converting the student admissions process for a physical therapist education program from the conventional paper format to a computerized format. Students submitted their application on computer disk. The content of the disk application was exactly the same as the paper format. The admissions coordinator imported electronically all the information into a database with the click of a button. Admissions committee members, with computers networked to the coordinator s host computer, reviewed the information on computer screen and submitted their votes electronically. The admissions chair managed the selection process with the assistance of queries programmed to screen the database for certain characteristics and report the results. These four groups of users all reported favorable assessments of the computerized process. As a result, we believe that other programs could also benefit from a computer-assisted admissions process.
