Abstract

This paper explores the dichotomy between the current provision of antenatal and postnatal care based on service provision rather than individual need. There is an argument for a midwifery service that sees continuity of levels of care and support as fundamental to maternal and infant future health, so that the transfer of a mother and baby from a hospital environment back to their home is seen as the beginning of a process rather than a conclusion.
